چکیده

The non-resonant dynamic galloping of an iced, electrical transmission line is studied. Conditions and trends for the initiation of galloping have been given previously. Boundaries are presented here at which a periodic plunge or torsional motion loses stability and bifurcates into a quasi-periodic (mixed-mode) motion. Specific attention is given to the overall effects of an iced line’s eccentricity and its inertia to mass ratio. These effects are shown to be more complicated than those for the corresponding co-centric line.

Instability Trends of Inertially Coupled Galloping, Part I: Initiation

The objective of this paper is to investigate the trends of the dynamic behavior of a single iced conductor. Attention is focused not only on the initiation of galloping but also on boundaries where a periodic plunge or torsional motion emerge. Trends with respect to the iced conductor’s eccentricity and its inertia to mass ratio are particularly stressed. They are shown to be complicated becau...

Nonlinear Free Vibrations of Coupled Spans of Overhead Transmission Lines

The weakly nonlinear, freely vibrating motion of a system of coupled spans of suspended overhead transmission lines is studied. It is shown that the natural vibration is the gravity mode, of which the unsteady tension component vanishes in the first harmonic. The problem was born out of a study of the phenomenon of galloping, which is a high amplitude periodic oscillation of overhead transmissi...

Transition to longitudinal instability of detonation waves is generically associated with Hopf bifurcation to time-periodic galloping solutions

We show that transition to longitudinal instability of strong detonation solutions of reactive compressible Navier–Stokes equations is generically associated with Hopf bifurcation to nearby time-periodic “galloping”, or “pulsating”, solutions, in agreement with physical and numerical observation. The analysis is by pointwise semigroup techniques introduced by the authors and collaborators in pr...

Galloping and VIV control of square-section cylinder utilizing direct opposing smart control force

An adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller (AFSMC) is adopted to reduce the 2D flow-induced vibration of an elastically supported square-section cylinder, free to oscillate in stream-wise andtransverse directions in both lock-in and galloping regions. The AFSMC strategy consists of a fuzzy logic inference system intended to follow a sliding-mode controller (SMC), and a robust control syste...

Dynamic Instability Analysis of Embedded Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes under Combined Static and Periodic Axial Loads using Floquet–Lyapunov Theory

The dynamic instability of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) and triple-walled carbon nanotubes (TWCNT) embedded in an elastic medium under combined static and periodic axial loads are investigated using Floquet–Lyapunov theory. An elastic multiple-beam model is utilized where the nested slender nanotubes are coupled with each other through the van d...
